Change the words in a PDF
Written by Autonome. Updated 5 November 2026.
How do I fix a typo in a PDF when I don't have the original file?
Open it in an editor that can change the text already in the PDF, click the line and type the correction. A good editor removes the old words. A weak one pastes new text over the top and leaves the original underneath, where search still finds it.
Autonome PDF's Edit text removes the old words. It works best on PDFs made from Word or accounting software. If a line can't be changed, it tells you, and you can cover it with white and type over it instead.
- Click a line, type the change.
- The old words are removed from the file.

Updating the same price list or standard quote?
In Autonome, PDF Studio edits the copy in Company Files and saves your change as a new version beside the original, so you can always go back to last month's prices.

Questions
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Not directly, because a scan is a picture of words. Run Make text searchable first, or cover the line with white and type over it.
What if a line can't be edited?
Autonome PDF says so for that line rather than producing a mess.
